Don't Forget Your Pants

I have been trying for a few months to get back into the regular exercise habit. Mostly I’ve been going on the weekends, which is good, but I wanted to see if I couldn’t fit in another day of exercise during the week to help with stress and to just feel better. Last night I decided I would give it a try today. It was a trial run because I also have to factor in the commute to New Jersey now.

My daughter was in bed and I began to plan out my outfits for today. I put my work items in a bag with some toiletries. I put my gym clothes in the bathroom so as soon as I got up I would put those on and head out the door. Then I spent some time watching television with the pooches until it was time to head up to bed.

I set my alarm a little earlier so that I could get up and get to the gym. I dressed very quickly and headed out the door. I figured that I had a good 20-25 minutes I could spend at the gym doing weight machines and ab work. Everything was falling into place. I ran down to the locker room to take a shower and that’s when I realized that I didn’t have my work pants in my bag.

In all the preparation, I had forgotten that they were folded on the sofa and not with my suit jacket. When I went to bed, I forgot to bring them with me to put in the bad. So…..I quickly put on my gym pants (very fashionable with my work outfit on top!) and texted my husband to inform him of the wonderful situation that was afoot. I ran home to get my pants, which he couldn’t find at first. I quickly got changed in the bathroom and headed back out the door. This really hurt my commuting cushion a bit. I was now 15 minutes later than I wanted to be.

At a point as I was getting to the subway, I said ‘whatever’. The subway came quickly and I made the connection to the commuter train very quickly. Phew. And then the commuter train was delayed. YAY!!!
By then I was so unconcerned I didn’t care any more. I just kept reading my book and decided that I really had no control over how the day was going in the commuting regard. (The pants were in my control and that was a different matter.) I was slightly more annoyed by the fact that I had intended to go to Brooklyn instead because I wanted to not deal with this crazy connection but because of a team meeting, I schlepped my rear end to Jersey.
Finally I got to Jersey and sat at my desk a good 25 minutes later than normal. I opened up my emails and the team meeting was canceled. Sigh! I wanted to hurt someone but instead I just picked up my cup of coffee and dropped it on myself. It was an excellent morning!

I am not known for my gracefulness (there have got to be a couple of entries on my other clumsy antics, I am sure) but in my rush to get to the gym, I was less elegant and majestic. I probably shouldn’t have cared about getting to Jersey for the team meeting as it wasn’t even a priority for the person who insisted that it happen! But at the end of this piece,  the moral of the story is ‘don’t forget your pants.’ Nothing else really matters.
